 Myotherapy Clinic

Myotherapy is a technique of ischemic compression which was described by a physical therapist named Bonnie Prudden. Ischemic compression was a method she adopted from Dr. Travell Myofascial Pain and Dysfunction concepts due to Trigger Points. Ischemic compression applied on a Trigger Point must have a sustained amount of pressure to release the hypersensitive spot in the muscular fibers.

The ischemic compression will activate the Trigger Point and it will cause a referral. If the Trigger Point is latent (non-reactive) sustain digital pressure will release it to a reactive state again helping the restoration of the muscle and aids in healing. Heat and Home Stretch Program are extremely important to apply after treatment. Dr. Travell and Simons use Trigger Point In jections as well as Spray and Stretch Techniques.

The pressure will bring circulatory changes in the muscle increase oxygen and nutrition back to the affected muscle. There are many levels of discomfort for the client who suffers from hyperactive Trigger Point and may cause them to protect the Trigger Point while under treatment. If this is the case, many treatments must be applied to rid the muscles from the dysfunctional Trigger Points. If there is chronic pain and stiffness Spray and Stretch is an alternative method used in the clinic here in Santa Cruz, CA.

If you have painful, stiff or soreness it is usually associated with Myofascial Trigger Points and you should schedule an appointment.
